KUCHING - Normah Medical Specialist Centre (NMSC) stresses the importance of team approach in disease management, said its chief executive officer Datuk Professor Dr Saw Huat Seong yesterday.  He said the approach was important especially in the treatment of cancer and heart disease.

"Team planning in disease management involves long-term planning therapy before actually instituting treatment especially in cancer and heart disease," said Dr Saw in an exclusive interview with Tribune in his office at NMSC.  He added that NMSC was also looking at a holistic health approach to dispel fears that "NMSC is an expensive healthcare facility."

He also pointed out that NMSC was committed to improving the standard of the centre through resident specialists who held weekly meetings to discuss problem patients and review outcome.

He said: "NMSC is committed to providing the best healthcare services in the whole Island of Borneo. So there is no reason for anyone to seek medical treatment elsewhere when we have one of the best healthcare centres in the country just at our backyard," said Dr Saw, adding that NMSC is affiliated with some of the most renowned medical centres in the world including Mayo Clinic in the United States and the University of Vienna.

He also pointed out that NMSC was committed to improving the standard of the centre through resident specialists who held weekly meetings to discuss problem patients and review outcome.

"The committee overseeing improvement addresses adverse outcomes, complications and complaints and make recommendations for prevention and recurrence of unexpected adverse results and events," he said, adding that NMSC also held regular medical education forums, seminars and workshops.

Other facilities available are cardiology & cardiac surgery, physiotherapy treatment, obstetrics, dialysis centre and professional support team.

"Unfortunately, all these cost money but they by no means make NMSC expensive. In fact, if one compares NMSC costs with those in Singapore, Peninsular Malaysia and overseas, one will not be able to find better value for money. What is important is cost effective affordable healthcare delivery and not cheap therapy," he stressed, adding that cheap tended to lead to cutting corners.

He also advised people in the State to emulate the Mayo Clinic and Rochester USA.

"No Rochester resident would allow any outsider to run down the reputation of Mayo Clinic as what it stands for: Mayo is Rochester and vice-versa. Can we make Kuching to stand for NMSC now and the Sarawak International Medical Centre (SIMC) subsequently and NMSC/ SIMC Kuching?" he asked.
