KUCHING -- Telekom Malaysia signed an agreement worth RM160,000 for InfoAkademik Unimas with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) yesterday. The move, in line with the government's aspiration of emphasising the use of knowledge by employing the latest technology, is aimed at creating an informative student community on campus.

InfoAkademik Unimas is a TM Infoline 600 service, which provides information on enrolment to Unimas, semester results, information on convocation and Unimas academic calendar for a year.

According to Telco Telekom Malaysia Acting Head of Consumer and Business Tuan Haji Zainal Abidin Abdul Rahman, InfoAkademik Unimas uses the 600 83 7895 fixed line number where the minimum charges arc 78 cents per minute from 7.00 a.m. until 7.00 p.m. and 39 cents per minute from 7.00 p.m. until 7.00 a.m.

"Calls can be made through Telekom Malavsia fixed line, TMTouch, Telecard and Telekom Malaysia public phone by using Ring Ring Card," said Zainal at the signing of memorandum of agreement (MoA) for InfoAkademik Unimas at Unimas yesterday.

He added that this value added service was part of the government's approach in assisting the students to obtain fast and accurate information on the university.

"With the introduction of this service, Unimas' students will be able to save time and money for better education benefits," said Zainal. Like any other Telekom Malaysia's products, InfoAkademik Unimas would also be expanded and updated from time to time within five years' time with the provision of new and more dynamic information, more interactive menu and Short Message Service (SMS), he added.

Earlier, Deputy Chancellor (Academic) of Unimas Professor Abdul Rashid Abdullah expressed the hope that the facility could accommodate information such as research activities and seminars in Unimas so that the society would know what was going on in Unimas. Also present was Unimas Vice Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Yusuf Hadi .
